Battle and Scorpions Team Up For River City Charity Shield

San Antonio's Professional Soccer Clubs Come Together

This season has provided an opportunity for the professional soccer scene in San Antonio to come together. The NASL's Scorpions and the BSL's Battle will face off on June 15th in the first ever River City Charity Shield match.  Proceeds from the match will benefit Morgan's Wonderland and youth soccer in San Antonio.

"We're ecstatic," said Alamo City management.  "This is a fantastic opportunity for this city to come out and share in something we all love and at the same time help our community.  Morgan's Wonderland is a fantastic endeavor that we fully support.  Our youth ?  There's nothing more important than that.  We hope to foster not only soccer with this partnership, but a sense of community.  And you know, if we can get bragging rights in the city we'll take that too."

A tongue in cheek and wink of an eye accompanied the last line of what is an otherwise heartfelt sentiment from the Alamo City Battle.  The ownership and players alike jumped on the opportunity when it came up.  In conjunction with the exhibition match the clubs will also be sponsoring a jointly run free youth clinic in the week leading up to the match.

The Kid Is All Right

Fagundez Rescues Battle in 2-1 Victory Over Rose City

It was interesting to say the least.  The defending BSL Champions marched into San Antonio on a hot streak.  They were looking every bit the champions and were looking to take a stab at the high flying Battle.  While both clubs flubbed chance after chance, it was Alamo City that came out with the 3pts.  It took literally the last man to get it done.  In a cruel twist it looked as though the Battle were doomed.  In a rule that still makes no sense to the club, Obafemi Martins had his score taken off the books when he later got a red card.  That swung the match over to Rose City as former Battle player Aurelien Collin put a shot on frame to throw the Flyers up 1-0 late into the match.  Facing the defending MLS champions, it was up to the youngest player on the roster to conjure up something.  Just as he'd been all season, Diego Fagundez was all over the place.  He quickly put the Battle even with an assist and thought he'd won the game when his free kick assisted Lee Ngyuen's goal.  In some kind of bizarro scoring from the MLS it didn't count in the box score despite being credited in the match recap.  The kid must have sensed it as he added a last minute goal to push the Battle to victory.

It was a huge win as the Battle swept the season series with the defending champions by identical 2-1 score lines.  The rest of the BSL action couldn't have played out better for the Battle as only Burud Town was also able to come out with a win among teams at the top of the table.  Huge points were gained on Orange County as Alliance exploded for a 6 spot in an offensive showing they've waited for all year.  Everyone else near the top drew their matches allowing Alamo City to get some room at the top while gaining the lead in Major's Cup Qualifying.  Heading into the break for International Play, the Battle are in strong positions in the standings.
